Birthday Blues

Friday night, I walked into The Grey Lady on the Lower East Side for my 'surprise' birthday-slash-new-job party. I still hadn't heard from Richard. At this point, I was pissed, and I was also sick of people telling me to "back off and give him his space." Yeah, I shouldn't have ambushed him like I did, but it had been five days since we spoke, enough time for him to come to terms with whatever it was he needed to come to terms with. This is a guy who has told me he loves me, and who has spent the entire holiday season with my family, and he doesn't even have the decency to send me a text on my birthday? I was done.

"I'd be done too," Ashley said, handing me a vodka soda.

I took a sip. "You're not very subtle, you know?"

"This is not about me not liking Richard for you," Ashley said. "If I knew nothing about Richard but this incident, I would still be saying this. He clearly doesn't want to be in a relationship with you."

I covered my heart with my hand and winced. "It's my birthday-and-new-job party, have a little mercy."

Ashley gave me A Look. "You know I don't just mean you. I mean anyone. I think he likes the idea of it in theory, but when it comes to the actual hard relationship stuff, he doesn't want to put in the work." She pushed a twenty on the bar to pay for our drinks. "You shouldn't take it personally. He did it to Sam too."

I know it wasn't her intention, but that just made me feel worse. I like Richard, was falling in love with Richard, because it felt like we had a special connection. Richard has a hard time opening up to people and I thought I was the person he would do that with. Just like every other lovesick girl in the world, I guess.

"Hey." Ashley pointed her chin across the bar. "Peter."

He didn't see me, but I saw him. He was wearing this black cashmere coat that I love. It's something Nance would describe as 'rich looking', makes him look like he's someone. He pushed his hair back and looked over his shoulder, at the tall dark haired girl in leather pants opening the door behind him. He smiled. Leaned down and kissed her. When he straightened up again, he scanned the bar. This time, he saw me.

--

"Think twenty-six will be a good year?" Peter asked.

I nodded. Despite the Richard hiccup, I really did. "I feel like my career is finally taking off. Like I could be in a completely different place this time next year. No more assistant for me."

Peter sipped his drink and nodded. "If William keeps his word that is."

I'd told Peter all about my new job, and the promise William had made me. "I know you don't like him," I said, "but he's never given me a reason to doubt him. Plus," I shrugged, "it's not really about William. I go to LA if I prove myself to the partners. It's all on me."

"I would just hate to see you get your hopes up and it doesn't work out," Peter said.

"What is this?" I laughed. "Ye of little faith."

"No!" Peter laughed back. "It's just...do you really think this was the right move for you? You have to be a shark to work in that industry."

I frowned into my drink. I didn't want to sour the night by getting defensive with Peter, but it bothered me that he would assume I don't have it in me to make it in 'the business,' as I'm learning people call it. I'd worked the job offer from CWA—negotiated a higher salary and made a deal regarding the Agent Training Program that to my knowledge, no assistant has ever made before. A dolphin couldn't have pulled that off.

"Hey!" Devon, Peter's date, popped up in front of us, back from the bathroom.

"What can I get you?" Peter asked her.

She squinted at the drinks menu displayed above the bar. "Uh, I guess just a vodka cranberry."

Peter turned away from us to order her drink and Devon said, "So I'm confused. Is this a birthday party or a celebratory party?"

"Both," I said.

Devon glanced at her phone in her hand. She was incredibly striking, but she seemed really young to me. She started to text someone as she asked, "What are you celebrating?"

I smiled. "New job."

Still texting. "Cool. Where?"

I told her about my move to CWA. I kept it short, but she still seemed to zone out. I turned the conversation back on her. "What do you do?"

"Oh," she waved her hand, "I've been taking some time off since graduating last Spring."

I'm no math whiz, but if Devon graduated in the Spring, that meant she has been job-less for nine months—and she's at most twenty-three years old. Peter's last girlfriend was young, and I was much more of a spring chicken myself when we first started dating. Devon is three years younger than me, which on paper, seems like nothing. But when I compare what I was like when I was twenty-three to what I'm like now, I realize how big a difference it makes.

"Here." Peter handed Devon her bright drink and she pursed her lips, asking for a kiss. Peter looked uncomfortable as he leaned down and pecked her on the mouth.

"Oh my God!" Devon suddenly cried. "My old roommate is here." She put her hand on Peter's chest. "I'm just going to go say hello." She clicked off in her sharp booties.

"She seems nice," I said to Peter. He smirked at me.

"What?" I laughed.

"You're a really bad liar," Peter said.

"I'm not lying!" I said. "I just...what's with all the barely legal girlfriends?"

Peter's shoulder brushed mine and he grinned. "Jealous?"

I gave him a little push. "I'm just picking up on a pattern, that's all."

Peter shrugged. "I don't know. It's not like a conscious decision. These are just the girls I've met who I like and who seem easy," he arched an eyebrow at me, "and not in the biblical sense. I just mean they're laid-back. After Elizabeth, I need laid-back."

I almost asked if laid-back was code for naive and impressionable, but I bit my tongue. "Was I laid-back?

Peter drained the rest of his drink. "You used to be."

I nodded. "I know you don't really mean that as a compliment," I said, "but it is to me." I was so green when I first met Peter it must have been palpable, the way I can sense it on Devon. I don't feel green anymore.

Peter looked down at me, his eyes moving back and forth over me like he was skimming a newspaper article. "I'm happy you're happy."

I clinked my drink against his. "I'm happy you're happy."

Peter and Devon left not long after that. Peter is always going to give me that uh-oh feeling in my stomach (he is one handsome son of a bitch and I am only human), but I'm growing up, and it's becoming clear that we want different things. The whole reunion just made my anger towards Richard dissipate, and I found myself aching for him—I know he's had a tough time with his own job situation, but he has never once placed that burden on me. He's been nothing but excited about the changes in my career, cheering me on, rather than doubting that I can handle new challenges. It can't be easy for him to offer that kind of unbridled support when things aren't going his way, and that, to me, says a lot about a person's character.

Ashley was nowhere to be found, so I approached Nina, cozy in the crook of Nick's armpit. She's been dating him ever since November, and he's decided to move to New York when he finishes his graduate degree in the Spring. In the meantime, he's been visiting New York a lot. It warms my heart to think that Frank is getting to spend more time with him, after missing out on his childhood.

I tugged on her sleeve. "I think I'm going to get out of here."

"What?" Nina spat. "You can't! It's your party."

"I know," I sighed. "I have the birthday blues and I can't shake them."

Nina glanced at the time on her phone. "Stay another fifteen minutes, at least."

I looked at my phone too. It was 9:47. Nina had a point—it would be pretty pathetic to bail before the local news aired. "Okay," I agreed.

I'd had three vodka sodas, and they suddenly hit me all at once. "I'm going to the bathroom," I told her.

Nina studied me, her brows bunching together with suspicion. "You better not skip out."

"I'm not, Mom." I made my way to the bathrooms by the entrance of the bar. The line was long, and it took everything I had not to break into the little toddler pee dance while I waited. Finally, it was my turn, and I think I beat Tom Hanks' record in that scene from A League of Their Own.

I washed up and slid open the door (oh, trendy New York bar bathrooms and your sliding frosted glass doors). I was rounding the corner to return to the main room when I stopped dead in my tracks. Richard was standing in front of me.

"Hi," he said. His face was scruffy; he clearly hadn't shaved for days. It read as nonchalant on him, like he didn't care about anything and no one could make him, and I just wanted him more.

I did my best to steel everything in my face. "Hi."

"Happy birthday," he said.

I swallowed the heavy lump in my throat. "Thanks."

"I want you to come with me," he said, and he held his hand out.

I stared at it, unmoving. "Where?"

"My place."

I still didn't move.

"I have some stuff to tell you, Josie," Richard said. "I owe it to you to tell you this. I know this now." I still wasn't giving him my hand, so he grabbed it and pulled me into him. I tried to push him off, but then he whispered into my ear, "I fucking love you. I'm not going to fuck this up."

I looked over his shoulder at Nina, who was staring at us intently. She gave me a little smile and a nod. I realized she'd known he was coming all along.

I let Richard lead me out of the bar.

***Thank you to everyone who has been understanding of the extra demands on my schedule lately. Let's not let the negativity ruin the fun for us—I know sometimes it seems like it takes over the entire comments section, but the traffic numbers show that a very small portion of the readership suffers from outraged fingers syndrome. If I listened to everyone who tried to tear me down in my life, I wouldn't be where I am today.

I will have book news to share in 5-6 weeks (i.e. forever for this impatient millennial!).

  7. As much as I loved Peter, I'm glad to see that Josie has realized that they are never going to want the same things. It bothers me as well that he still doesn't seem to believe in her. Richard has been a jerk here recently, but I can't help but feel like he has some reasons behind it and will make it up to Josie soon! I'm really liking them together! Thanks for posting Jessica!

  11. OHMYGOD! I knew Richard wasn't gonna fuck this up! I was even thinking maybe he'd see Peter when he comes to the party unannounced, hoping to be unseen just 'cause he missed Josie, but gets all jealous and territorial and then, whoa, I ACTUALLY read his name in the scene and everything's just perfect in my life again!

BTW, I love the way he says "I fucking love you." It somehow provides the right amount of intensity to the pent-up emotions he has for her. Love love love this! Can't wait for more!

  16. Blog Comment: So Richard shows up to her birthday party that her friends threw her without calling looking like crap to drag her away to his apartment to listen to his saga on her birthday. Great guy! Really not selfish of him! Again this guy is 29??? Josie...Richard is a complete ass. When did Ashley start having more sense than you?

Jessica: I am glad thing are coming along on the book. I love this blog, I have been reading it for years. Don't worry about negative people, some people need things to complain about.

    2. Okay I re-read that part and you could be right or maybe she just wanted her to enjoy her b-day party-I can't tell.

      Delete
    3. She knew he was coming. AND Josie WANTED to see him.

      Delete
    4. Still not sure about that and I agree Josie has poor judgment

      Delete
    5. You're not sure about if Nina knew he was coming? Why else would she ask her to stay for 15 more minutes? Why not another hour? 15 minutes allowed Richard to get there before she bailed.

I don't think Josie has any worse judgment than any of us do. She loves him and she's mature enough and compassionate enough to want to talk to him before bailing or whatever her decision ends up being. Don't see anything wrong with that. This world would be a better place if more people opened up instead of shutting down, IMO. Doesn't mean she's marrying the guy - they're just dating.

      Delete
    6. I am not sure he was in communication with Nina. I think Nina just wanted her to stay at her party that she threw her and have a good time. I agree that it is possible that she knew but the text can read either way so until the author elaborates I am not sure.

I cannot compare Josie to any of us. Because I don't know every single person reading this blog. However I can compare her to me and when it comes to people she has poor judgment and not just with Richard either. I think it was poor judgment to find out someone you slept with was keeping a list of girls from high school and then two days later continue seeing him. She doesn't examine people's actions...I guess she overlooks them or sees them in a way that she wants to see them or maybe hopes for the best. Also, I don't think Josie hearing Richard out is necessarily a mistake. I think leaving her birthday party to hear him out on his terms after he ignored her for two weeks and told her to go away is a mistake. She could have just easily told Richard that it was her birthday and she would call him later.

    7. Richard is an ass. I wish he'd be gone.
That being said, I also wish Josie's character would start to develop and evolve more. In her work life she's matured a little bit but personally it's like she's the same person she was in the beginning. People usually grow and change and she really hasn't. It's time for this blog to step up and take a turn. It's the same stuff over and over again....

  17. Ahhh!!! Doing a happy dance! I love Richard and Josie. I'm so glad he pulled his head out of his arse. I wish he would've done it BEFORE her birthday, not at her party, but I'm happy he's realized he was going to fuck it up if he didn't act. Yay!!

I love your blog, I've been following since back in the K days on Cosmo to the beginning of Josie. While I may be bummed for 2 seconds if you skip a post or take a holiday, I'm just so happy you have kept it going after Cosmo days :)

  21. I don't know why, but I feel really bad for Peter. He took a really hard hit with Elizabeth. I really hope in the end, he finds someone (preferably older and wiser than this Devon girl haha) and can have the life he always wanted. And I hope that we somehow get to hear about that happy ending too. Idk, I just really liked the guy and I think he's a good person. I am very happy that him and Josie can still be friends and care about each other. It's nice to see that, because we haven't been able to see Josie truly be friends with one of her exes before.

As for RIchard, I don't know if I can see him ever being the one for Josie. He just seems too unstable for her and I don't think he'd be a good person for Josie to settle down with. For now, it's okay. They seem to be falling in love with each other and that's great. I don't think we've ever seen Josie in love with someone, so it'll be a nice read and I'm actually excited about it. But I still don't think he's the right person for Josie to end up with when it's all said and done. Just my opinion though :) And we love you Jessica!! Don't ever ever ever stop writing!

  28. I find it humorous how the author sees a character in a completely different light than the readers. Richard is a complete ass. He may not place "burdens" related to work on Josie, however he certainly plays the mental mind-screw enough. To me that is way worse than anything Peter has ever done and I don't even want Peter and Josie back together. Peter is actually too good for her. Richard will continue to screw around with her and she will continue to take it. I wish there was some growth for Josie in maturity in her relationships.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I actually feel the opposite. Peter was constantly belittling Josie with backhanded remarks and condescension. Yes, Richard was kind of an ass on the surface to his conquests but that's from a female's perspective. I'm with, and have been with, a guy who was a lot like Richard in the past. In his mind, he never intentionally "played" the girls he'd hook up with. He just thought he liked them more than he actually did and didn't want to drag himself through a relationship he wasn't that invested in. I see a strong parallel in Richard. The one outburst he's had since dating Josie was very emotionally driven and when anyone keeps that much shit bottled up it isn't surprising that he exploded like that. I think all in all, he hasn't given Josie any reason to be hesitant about him as a boyfriend aside from being MIA for so long after his outburst. I just think people have put Peter on some unrealistic pedestal and have forgotten some of the shitty things he used to say to her.

      Delete
    2. Richard's behavior has nothing to do with Peter. Richard has played mind games with Josie since before they were together. No one is saying other girls, they are talking about Josie specifically. He intentionally did things to mess with her and still does. Not to mention his whole demeanor screams of instability emotionally. Hey if Josie likes a guy like that great, but honestly Richard is not a nice person.

I hope there is some hot make-up/birthday sex with Richard and Josie!

  65. I never liked Peter. He just seems sleazy going out with much younger women, because he has a problem with commitment.

  66. Didn't know you were getting some negativity for missing posts. That is quite lame! This blog is awesome, and I'm just glad you are keeping it going at all! I really look forward to your updates, so yeah you're awesome.

  67. Another great blog post! Thanks Jessica! Once again, you give us a bomb-ass posting. I've been reading since back in the K days with Cosmo. I LOVE and really appreciate (and I'm sure everyone else does too) that even if you don't have time for a blog post you still get on and give us readers an update. To me, it lets us know you're still thinking about us even when life gets super crazy. That was one thing that I found really frustrating about Cosmo's former blogger, was that we never knew when a new post was coming. So thank you, thank you for setting a schedule and not forgetting about us! I absolutely love the blog, can't wait to find out what Richard has to say!

  73. Love the post! I feel like it was kind of crappy of Richard to make her leave her own party. she has waited for him for 5 days, he can wait until she's ready to leave.

  74. I feel like even though Josie thinks it's clear that she and Peter are wanting different things and will be "just friends" from this point on, something will happen later on that will bring them back together again. Assuming everything works out, Josie will learn so much and will be even more mature than she is now, which I think will make Peter see her differently. I don't think Peter was completely wrong to question her career move--she is taking a risk and it won't be easy. But yes, it would have been nice if he had been somewhat supportive and wished her good luck. I really liked Josie and Peter together, BUT I also really like her and Richard together and am anxiously awaiting what he has to tell her on Tuesday! Even though I was bummed that J and P didn't work out, I would be just as bummed if J and R didn't work out either.

Happy belated birthday Josie! (haha) I'm currently 26 and it's been good so far! Hope the same goes for Josie! ;)

  78. jess u r a great writer. i'm so glad you don't let the crazy negativity get you down! can't wait to hear about ur book, girl!

  79. I feel like I finally understand why things didn't work with Peter and why it probably won't. Peter is looking for a young, naive, easy girl. He doesn't want a girl with ambition - a girl that presents some challenges. I think he is trying to find a girl who is the opposite of Elizabeth who was scheming, calculating, and driven to get what she wanted. He wants a relationship where he is, without a doubt, pulling the strings.
