Finally, News!

I'm not sure if anyone is even checking this thing anymore, but I promised to announce news about my book when I had some, and I FINALLY have some: My novel, LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE, will be published by Simon & Schuster in June 2015. This actually happened almost two months ago, but we couldn't make the announcement until we settled on the title, and that was a surprisingly, maddeningly difficult process.

Here is the announcement and link to the announcement in Publisher's Marketplace (scroll down to middle of the page, under Deal of the Day to read about it...note this will only be up on their homepage today, 4/2/14, so I've pasted the announcement beneath the link in case you come to this later):

http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/

Fiction: Debut: Former Cosmopolitan and current SELF Magazine articles editor Jessica Knoll's LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE, pitched as "psychotic Emily Giffin" about a NYC magazine editor on the cusp of marriage to the perfect guy, whose carefully constructed life starts to unravel as a documentary film threatens to shine a light on a violent incident from her past, to Sarah Knight at Simon & Schuster, in a major deal, at auction, by Alyssa Reuben at Paradigm (World).

I am SO excited for all you LSPers to read it. It's different from Josie's story, my editor is packaging it as "literary suspense meets edgy women's fiction," which I love. The "Josie" of this story has worked very hard to overcome her humble beginnings, and she's played a lot of people to create the so-called perfect life for herself. But as she nears her wedding, she is forced to confront a vicious incident from her past and her carefully crafted veneer begins to crack. She has a cutting sense of humor, but when you discover the source of her bite, you will root for her (or at least I hope you do). Even though there are parts of the book that are a little chilling, I wanted it to have a heart. I teared up when I wrote the last line!

My final edits are due in May, and I will be back here to wrap up the Josie story after I've handed everything in. I have loved blogging about her for the last two and a half years, and I adore the LSP community, but I am planning on bringing her story to an end in the near future. I really wanted to maintain the blog until I could share news with you about my book, and give you something real to read. In some ways, the blog has been more difficult to maintain than writing my book! There are days I experience writer's block or just have a long day at work, and I can give myself permission to come back to the book when I'm fresh again because I'm not subject to a twice weekly deadline. I don't have that kind of leeway with the blog, and there have been times I've been sitting at my computer at midnight, exhausted, trying to figure out what the heck to say! Then I end up posting something that I'm not 100% proud of, and I hate that feeling. It was different when this was a part of my job—it was something I did during my work day, and if I didn't do it, um, I would get fired, so the motivation was certainly there! But it's become something I do on top of my job and writing a book, and I did not anticipate how difficult and draining that would be. I hope you can understand that I'm a little burned out. I hate disbanding LSP, but I'm just trying to give myself a little break. The editing process has been tough, but there is an end in sight in May. The idea of having a few months where I don't have any responsibility other than my 9-5 (well, more like 10-8 in the magazine world!), where I don't have to be an anti-social hermit hunched over my laptop on the weekends—swoon!—it's like heaven to me. And after I've rebooted, I want to start on my second book, which is already bubbling away in my brain...

  3. There are LSPers out there! You guys are the best for checking this still, and thank you for your kind words. Believe me, I struggled a lot with the idea of ending Josie's story, it was not an easy decision to make (just ask my husband, my mom, my friends who have listened to me wax and wane for weeks....haha). My heart is saying write about Josie, but my brain is saying I canz rite animore know.

    1. Hi Jessica. Congrats on your exciting news!! Can I ask approximately how many LSP posts there may be til Josie's story wraps up? Please promise me that Peter and Josie will end up together!!! :-)

    2. NOOOoooooo :( :( LSP can not end. I refuse to believe it! Sigh.....Jessica thank you for writing this blog for as long as you were able to. But I know all good things must come to an end even if we do not want it happening. CONGRATULATIONS on your book it sounds like a great story. Thank you for all that you have done

    3. Do you think Josie will have another editor take over her story? It just doesn't feel complete yet! Personally her blog is bookmarked onto my phone and I check back whenever possible.
Hopefully we get more but it is understood how much stress you are under. Stoked about your book! Love and hussy hugs!

  4. Wow, how exciting! Congratulations, I look forward to reading the book, it sounds great.
Don't feel bad about ending Josie's story. Anyone who has ever juggled multiple things at once for an extended period of time (read: everyone) will understand. Thank you for continuing her story for as long as you did; you didn't have to do that, but we appreciate it!
FOR READERS: what are your favorite blogs similar to LSP??

  7. Aww so extremely happy for you Jessica!!! I had a huge grin on my face the entire time I read this (Except for the part when you said Josie's story would be coming to an end. Yep, definitely teared up a bit there haha). Thank you for keeping up with this blog, you and Josie are both so loved!!! And I agree with the others, PLEASEEE have Josie and Peter end up together!!! I would be so bummed if everything they went through together didn't result in a happy ending for them. Team Peter forever!!! :)

  8. Congratulations, Jessica. I'm very happy for you and can't wait to read your book. You news is a little bittersweet for me. While I'm thrilled for you, I am saddened that hear that Josie's story will be ending soon. All good things must come to an end and here's hoping to a happy ending for Josie and Peter, maybe? I've followed this blog from the beginning and have been motivated by you to create my own. I'm not a writer nor is my blog nearly as well written and captivating as yours but I have found writing to be an awesome stress relief. For that I want to thank you because you have been an inspiration to me. I can't wait to read what you have in store for Josie and I wish you nothing but the best with your book and career!!!

  9. Congrats!!
I've followed you since your cosmo days and am sad to hear you are going to end lsp! But like others have said all good things must come to an end! I hope that Peter is part of her happy ending, they've come so far and I think they are both realizing the attraction they both have to each other is undeniable. It's a Carrie and Mr. Big type of love! !

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh no, I guess its true that all good things must come to an end. But I am sure that you will have a thriving career as an author that will keep us LSPers entertained for years to come.

  11. Jessica, CONGRATULATIONS! I have also followed your blog from the first post back on Cosmo, and this is my first time commenting after reading other people's comments for months. I am so happy for you and will definitely be buying your book!

  12. Congrats Jessica, what wonderful news!

I sincerely hope Josie ends up with Peter. I expected you to tell us the blog would be no more, which is sad, but understandable. I just hope you don't end it suddenly. I think your dedicated readers (who have followed Josie since the Cosmo days) deserve something great! Peter for ever!!!

    1. I actually hope Josie meets a new guy in LA... I do like Peter (he reminds a LOT of my ex of 5 years), but there was never something completely right about their relationship - the power balance was too off for me.

In any regard, I'm looking forward to more book news and to see what happens to Josie!

  13. Congrats on your book deal!! I can't wait to read it!! Will you be keeping the LSP site up? Maybe you can post when the book is released to let us know? I already have a note on my calendar for June 2015 so will look for it then! Congrats!!
So sorry to see the blog end - it really is the best. I have loved reading about Josie's adventures! Maybe you could pick it back up in a few years and fast forward her story too? Would love to see her newly married to Peter - there are so many stories you could still write about her! Anyway, thanks for the great posts and so happy for you!!

  14. Wow, I haven't checked this blog in weeks and happened to check it today of all days!I'm SO thrilled by your news! I'll definitely be reading.

I don't blame you for ending the story, and I think it's a good time in the storyline to do so. You're basically writing a novel little by little, and it can be hard to stretch out a story that long, no matter how much we love to read it!

You inspired me to start writing my own fiction blog (like so many out there) and even though it'll never reach LSP popularity, I am still happy I did it as it gives me a creative outlet. I'm sincerely amazed about how you can spin a story line that keeps us coming back for more - you're awesome at it! Thank you though, for being a great inspiration. I still look back at your old posts and get ideas.

BTW....Would love to see an "epilogue" of some sort after the current ending, (even if it's published right after the ending) that fast forwards us 5 years or something in the future to see how it all played out. Think of it like the SATC movies after the series. ;)

  16. Such a bittersweet feeling! SO excited for the book but at the same time I hate to see Josie's story end. But all great things must come to an end someday. I never thought I would be confident in my writing and after sticking by your blog for so long I finally started a fictional blog of my own. I know it's hardly comparable lol and beginner stuff but you and your blog truly inspired me to share my ideas with others. Thank you for that. As far as your book goes, I know it will be amazing and I will buy and read it as soon as I can!

I'm really going to miss your blog. I've been following Josie's adventures since the cosmo days and I feel that the character has grown so much. Congratulations Jessica, I'm happy that your book is done and about to go on sale! it must be great to hold your book and see all your work put together and eventually being read at coffee shops or in parks. Thank you so much for continuing Josie's story even though it was no longer your 9-5 job duty. It is the first fictional blog I had ever read and I thank for always putting thought and creativity into your post.
I only ask that you give Josie an ending worthy of the life you have created for her, I went back and read K after finding your blog and was disappointed on how that ended so abruptly.
