Crazy Pills

I huffed into the restaurant, five minutes late, expecting to see Peter hunched over his Basil Hayden's. There were plenty of Baldwins in custom made suits occupying the bar stools, but Peter wasn't one of them. I found a spot in the corner and peeled off my extra layers.

I was going to wait to order a drink until Peter arrived, but another five minutes ticked by and when the bartender asked me if I wanted anything other than water for the second time, I ordered the cheapest cab on the menu.

It was another seven minutes before I heard Peter's voice behind me. "Sorry about that."

I turned. "I was starting to think you'd stood me up."

Peter settled into the seat next to mine and asked for his bourbon neat. "No. Just got hung up at work. This LA deal—it's shaping up to be a royal pain in my ass."

I sipped my wine. "Tell me about it."

Peter's drink landed in front of him and he brought the glass to his lips. "I thought you were all for going to LA."

"I am," I said. "But it's so last minute and I feel frantic about it. I have to wrap up a lot of things at work before I go. I'm trying to find someone to sublet my apartment too. And I need to get in some last minute face time with family and friends." I paused. "And my boyfriend."

Peter raised his eyebrows. "Boyfriend?"

"Uh-huh," I said. "I've been seeing him for a few months. But we've been friends for a while. I think you met him that night in the Hamptons. That party at my share house. Richard? We used to work together at Literatti."

Peter set his drink on the bar and didn't say anything.

"So that's why I wanted to meet," I said, cringing as my voice cracked over the last word. Peter's coolness always has a way of getting to me. "I just don't want to give you the wrong impression or anything. The only thing I'm going to have time for in LA is my job. Nothing else."

Peter's upper lip curled. "Good for you, Josie."

I was starting to feel like I had dreamt the whole scene in the conference room. Peter was acting like he had no idea what I was getting at. "You said you missed me," I reminded him. "I took that to mean you were going out to LA to try this again, or whatever."

Peter dropped his chin to his chest with a little laugh. "Josie, I'm going to LA because it's a great opportunity for me. For my career. I'm thirty-eight years old—I wouldn't base a major career decision on some girl. "

"Great," I bristled.

"Great," Peter repeated, grimacing as he swallowed another sip of bourbon. "So we're on the same page."

I furrowed my brow at him. "Am I taking crazy pills or something? You told me you missed me. You made it sound like that was the reason you were going to LA. I just wanted to put it out there that I'm with someone. I'm very happy with someone. Very happy and"—

"Wait, are you happy?" Peter winked at me. "I didn't catch if you were."

Now I was really flustered. "You're hysterical," I muttered.

"Josie," Peter steepled his hands, "yes, I said I missed you, and I do. But you say you have a boyfriend. I didn't realize that. You seemed single at your birthday party." He shrugged. "But you're not. No big deal. From what I understand, we'll hardly be working with each other in LA. So you can tell your boyfriend to relax."

"He is relaxed," I said. "It's not like he sent me to do his bidding or anything. I was the one who was a little freaked out."

Peter smiled, smugly. "I can see that."

I reached into my purse and found my wallet. "So I'm going to go before this can get any weirder."

I reached across the bar to leave a twenty on the table but Peter grabbed my wrist. "I got it."

"No, really," I tried to wiggle my wrist out of his hand, "I want to"—

Peter pushed my hand into my lap. "I've got it."

I stared at Peter's hand, still on top of mine. "Fine. Thanks."

Peter drew his hand away and gave me a tight smile. "I guess the next time I see you it's on the west coast."

I nodded as I climbed off the bar stool. "Yup. Have a safe trip out."

"You too." Peter sipped his drink, watching me zip up my coat.

"Well, bye," I said.

Peter wiggled a few fingers at me and I turned on my heel, cursing myself the entire way out the door. Could I have been any less smooth? Not that Peter's opinion matters, I reminded myself. Once I'd put a few blocks between myself and the restaurant, I dug around in my coat pocket for my phone and texted Richard to see if he wanted to grab dinner or something.

'Actually on LI now,' he wrote.

'Everything okay?' I asked.

'Eh. My dad found out about the charges against my mom. It's been kind of a nightmare.'

My thumbs hovered over the keyboard. I didn't want to impose, but I wanted to let him know I was here if he needed me. 'What can I do? Want me to come out there?'

I was positive Richard would brush me off, so I was shocked when he wrote back, 'Actually, yeah. I'm supposed to go over to my dad's for dinner tomorrow night. My meathead step-brothers will be there. I could really use a wingman.'

'You've got yourself a wingman with the best rack this side of the Hudson,' I wrote, and added a wink-y face. Richard and I texted back and forth a few more times, trying to figure out what time train I should take, before we said goodnight.

'By the way,' Richard wrote, 'how'd it go with old balls?'

I snickered and typed, 'That's not very nice.'

'You're not with me because I'm nice,' Richard wrote.

'Why am I with you then?'

'Because I call you out on your ridiculous bullshit,' he wrote. 'Also, that thing I do with my tongue. Also, I'm filthy rich.'

I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling. 'You forgot modest.'

'Modesty is for the mediocre,' Richard wrote, 'Night, babe.'

  3. I find that Josie really wanted a reaction from Peter and was kind of disappointed when he didn't give her the 'i'll fight for you' reaction.
I like where her and Richard are moving, he is really evolving, I doubt he ever took any girl ever back to LI.

Love Richard, don't care for Peter's character anymore..

  4. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Josie is a child riddled with insecurities and delusions. She's MAD that Peter didn't react to her having a boyfriend. She wanted him to thrown himself on the floor crying in anguish (because no man should be able to resist her) and when he didn't, she once AGAIN threw a tantrum. I am so so so tired of her being such an annoying little brat. If she really cared about Richard, she wouldn't have cared that P didn't care. The girls cares about no one but herself. She's obviously one of those pathetic women who measures her self-worth off of how many men are lusting after her at the time. Peter didn't take the bait, so she ran back to Richard for validation. (Note: this isn't bashing Jessica or the blog. I LOVE the blog and have been keeping up for over a year and a half. I just think that Josie, albeit fictional, is a sad sad girl. Get some self-esteem, honey.)

    2. Personally, I interpreted her actions as more of not wanting to lead Peter on, so she wanted to meet for the drink and talk to him about it….then he made her feel silly/embarrassed for thinking he was going to LA for her (which maybe was her misinterpretation, or maybe Peter is really crushed inside and was just keeping a good face to save himself the embarrassment).

  6. Hmm, am I the only one who thinks Josie was a little disappointed by Peter's reaction to her telling him she had a boyfriend? Reminds me of when she met Richard at the bar after Thanksgiving and he "lied" and said he wasn't in love with her and she was disappointed. I don't love Richard but I'm glad we are going to get to meet his crazy family soon.

  8. I don't think she was mad at peter, I think she was annoyed that peter played it so cool. By playing it so cool he was trying to make her feel like she was the one who was wrapped up with him. In other words, as she said, like she had dreamt it all up. What he said to her in the conference room was intense and yet when she addressed it, he acted like it was nothing. That's game playing and her feeling weird and tense about it wasn't anger, he was trying to manipulate her and make her feel insecure and well she did. if she felt mad at all it was because he was making her feel small, not because he didn't put on a show. Yet, the "looking at his hand on mine" and a few other hints of this does show she still has feelings for him. Sometimes a man in our lives is always able to make us feel insecure and a bit lusty for them. That doesn't mean she loves him or thinks he's good for her. I haven't been following the blog long enough to know, but Peter sounds like he gets a thrill on making her feel little and that's how he manages to keep her a bit hooked. It's dysfunctional. http://attachedtoparenting.com

    1. I agree that she wasn't angry, but I do think she was annoyed and maybe disappointed. I don't think Peter was trying to make Josie feel small at all. I think that Josie tends to blow everything WAY out of proportion. She does act like the world revolves around her and she absolutely has to clarify every little detail with everyone all the time. That is immaturity on her part. So Peter said he missed her. If she didn't care about that statement and didn't want further clarification on it then she wouldn't have asked to meet Peter over drinks for a single statement. Josie creates this drama, it is her dysfunction. What would have done if you were Peter? Become all apologetic over something so dumb??

    2. I agree she with the original post, she was more upset because he made it seem like she had incorrectly thought that. Truth is I think he acted like that because he was bummed she had a bf. He kind of has a track record of acting this way when he doesn't like Josie's answer to stuff. I like them both but Richard is the one for her right now, I think. The next few weeks of posts should be interesting!

    3. peter saying he was moving to LA because he missed Josie and thus infiltrating her life is a minor detail to be clarified....it's damn near stalking! And, she certainly had to let him know that she was involved with someone else at some point, better to do it before LA rather than during. I do think Josie is a bit dramatic, sure...but not this time. As for what would I have done if I was Peter. I may have been embarrassed and played it cool but I wouldn't have tried to make her feel stupid, which is what he did.

      Delete
    4. He didn't say he was moving to LA because he missed Josie. He said this was a big business deal and as a side note, he missed Josie. That is no where near stalking. I also think Josie interprets things the way she wants to. I don't think Peter makes her feel stupid, I think she feels stupid because she acts stupid around Peter. Age difference probably has a lot to do with that.

  10. I mean I took what Peter said to mean that he did miss her but who at his stage in their career would go all the way to LA just for that reason. I mean so both are true, he wanted the opportunity and he missed her. In addition, she could have just called or told him on the spot that she was serious with someone.

As for Richard, he literally doesn't have one attractive quality. I can't even bring myself to feel sorry for him.

I am for Josie giving Peter another chance or for someone new. At this point, I would take anyone over Richard.

  15. Peter really has game. He throws Josie a bone, and when she throws it back, he is able to downplay it and coming out smelling like a rose while she is stuttering, stammering and wondering what the hell just happened. Very entertaining! I have a feeling he will find time to make her uneasy and throw her off her game a bit where romance is concerned once they are in LA.

  17. It's so crazy to read the difference of opinions in the comments section! I think that Richard was trying to open a door and Josie shut it. Richard tried to play it off to keep his ego instead of just admitting to what he was doing and acknowledging it, like Josie did, like an adult. I don't think she threw a tantrum, I just think she didn't expect him to lie and downplay what he said and it threw her off. I am also loving Richard more and more! I think what he said was funny, which it was meant to be, and made him look playful and cute!

  18. Josie invited Peter for a drink because she wanted him to profess his love for her and beg her to take him back when she said she had a boyfriend. Peter did what an adult does and says yes I miss you but you have a man so I'm going to back off. That is a hit to Josie's ego and all of a sudden she's thrown off guard and stuttering and stammering because she feels like a damn fool. She had no business inviting Peter for a drink if that comment meant nothing to her. She likes Peter and doesn't want to admit it.

Since when is Richard her boyfriend? How have they been dating for months? I think Richard is an egomaniac, he's not all that and he treats Josie poorly. Everything in this relationship is about him. How does she not know that his dad found out about the situation and that he is LI til now? If this was her bf he would tell her, "hey Josie I'm heading to LI to see my family." Do they not talk?

    1. Actually, that's not the way it played out at all. Josie pretty benignly told him the reason she was meeting with him - I don't read any description of tone or anything - and the first reaction you read is Peter's lip curling before responding. He very purposefully put her on the defense and I can't imagine anyone in the same situation reacting much more smoothly than she did. These two have a very unbalanced dynamic and do NOT belong together. He is coming off as more and more of an a** each time I read about him.

And perhaps the "Richard's dad finding out about his mom's charges" thing is brand new. As in TODAY brand new. Hardly something to get worked up about that she didn't know.

      Delete
    2. If Peter missing her had no impact on Josie then she wouldn't have any urge to meet him to tell him she has a boyfriend. Josie is childlike, seeking validation from men. Peter didn't break when she told him about Richard as she wished and she threw a fit. Peter handled himself well. Yes he misses her but he isn't running his life, career with only her in mind. She clearly has feelings for him she isn't willing to admit.

As for Richard, he is a jerk. What has he ever done for Josie that was nice. She is there for him, helping him through difficult times, supporting him and he is nothing less than an jerk to her. Yes, he makes it up to her with sex but where is the emotional connection. This is a one-sided relationship with Josie catering to Richard. She needs a new man, not Richard, Peter, or Ian. A NEW man.

      Delete
    3. If Josie didn't have any reaction to Peter telling her he missed her, she wouldn't be HUMAN. She would be lacking compassion. If that makes her "childlike" then we need more childlike people in the world, sorry.

Richard comes off like her best friend to me - that IS an emotional connection. Everyone keeps fixating on his delivery, but to me it's what he's delivering, even if it's wrapped in sarcasm. He's straight forward with her and supportive of her decisions. I don't read that s being a jerk. Tomato tomahto.

  21. The "some girl" comment was harsh. I think Peter could have handled that better. He was the one who infiltrated himself back into Josie's life and she did the responsible thing by letting him know she was in a relationship. That was unnecessary of Peter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hmm I feel like Peter clearly has feelings for Josie and she shut him down and he was hurt about it, what human wouldn't be? Now, the way Josie reacted just made her look childish, clearly proving that she does have feelings for Peter and she did not get the reaction she was looking for. I agree with one of the comments above, this is scene is very similar to when Josie wanted Richard to admit he was in love with her.

  25. I don't get how all of a sudden Josie is " in love" with Richard. Didn't she want to be single for a while and focus on her career?? I don't think it's a good time for her to be in a relationship especially with Richard. He's too much drama and a spoiled rich kid. Something has to happen with Peter in LA. he's better for her!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Agree with Alexis' description of Peter: bitter and condescending. He always did have a tendency to manipulate Josie with a condescending attitude, but now that he's aware of her relationship with Richard, Peter feels thwarted and ticked off about it...so he falls back into his default mode of false-superiority. Josie at least admits freely to herself how awkward and ridiculous she allows herself to feel around him, while Peter hides behind a snotty, high-handed attitude like it's some kind of shield. He needs a woman who will knock him off his high-horse when he needs it (which is every time he's feeling hurt, angry, and/or insecure). Josie needs to deflect his b.s. back at him and let him know she's on to his head games. Richard...he's still a wild card. I like him in a lot of ways, but wonder if his wounded upbringing has made his "edges" too sharp for a sensitive woman like Josie. If he can curb the cruel streak while dealing with her and be honest about his feelings, then they could have a chance. Who knows?

    ReplyDelete
  27. She's mad because he basically told her he wanted her back, and when she told him it's not gonna happen, he acted like she's imagining the whole thing. That's bull, manipulative crap. So now she's flustered, and annoyed. Why does that make her a terrible person? I'd be annoyed at douche behavior like that too.

  28. I think Josie more just felt embarrassed for what she interpreted. She went to Richard after talking with peter because he is her boyfriend. I think it was mature of Josie to try and set the record straight before la. I loved her and Peter but I really like her and Richard they fit better I think.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Josie likes to believe any man would fall at her feet just to be with her. She can't accept that Peter won't stop his life for her. The way Peter reacted, sure it was a little harsh, but if Josie didn't have feelings for him, she wouldn't have responded in such an insecure way. Of course she was disappointed; like every situation she wants everyone to tell her what she wants to hear. Richard is a bitchy ass-wipe. Can't wait til he is gone.

    1. I agree. I would have much rather Jessica written him off at Josie's birthday and left him as a decent guy, rather than turning him into a jerk, because he's actually a good guy. That wouldn't be fair to all of us readers who love Peter. I love this storyline with Peter and I think it's one of the best ones she's come up with yet, but I really hope she doesn't take it as an opportunity to ruin Peter. Especially since all the Richard fans love fueling the fire by twisting every single thing Peter does into either being "manipulative" or "belittling" or "playing games." If he doesn't end up with Josie, fine. I just don't want to see a character so many love, be turned into an awful douche.

  32. CAN WE NOT FORGET WHAT RICHARD HAS SAID IN THE PAST ABOUT BOYFRIENDS:

That got him to stop walking. "He's not even your boyfriend!" Richard laughed, meanly. "He has got you right where he wants you—thinking you're the one calling the shots, that you're the one who's on the fence about being in a relationship. It's genius, really."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Josie, no guy wants to be in a relationship. Ever. They just want to have sex and fall asleep and not have to meet your parents or do any of those bullshit boyfriend things. Peter is the happiest man on earth right now because he's getting to do just that and you're dumb enough to think it's on your terms."

  33. Peter got the single vibe from Josie at her birthday party because of Richard's actions. He was the one who went radio silent on her because of his family issues. He says he loves her, right? Then he shouldn't have shut her out. His insecurity and lack of respect for Josie is why he stayed silent. He's talking to Nina about his fears in his relationship. He should be talking to Josie. He tried to place doubts about Peter in Josie's head, and now he's insecure about the guy? What does he have to worry about if he thinks Peter would never want a relationship with her in the first place? Why is Richard with her? He's not very honest in his relationships, so how is he trustworthy now?

I think Peter saw L.A. as a career opportunity and a chance to see Josie. But she wasn't the main factor. Now that she has a BF, it's just work to him. And that's the reality. Like some have said, did she expect him to get all emotional and declare his feelings? Josie has a tendency to jump to conclusions and only hear what she wants to hear. That's what usually gets her into trouble.

And if she's very happy (she did keep saying it) in her relationship, then she wouldn't have to keep pointing it out. She's showing her insecurity. And if she claims to love him (and as he does her) why would she think he's going to brush him off? That means she's still walking on eggshells in regards to Richard's emotions and reactions. How is that love? Oh, and Richard isn't relaxed about the whole Peter situation. That's why he's texting Nina behind Josie's back.

  36. While I do think Peter has a tendency to come off as condescending, I don't get that it's on purpose. I think Josie has always felt inferior to him, and it still feels like she does. It's sad to me because at this point she has a lot going for her, and now more than ever she should feel more as an equal. Peter's reaction reminded me of Richard's when he thought Josie was rejecting him. A big difference I see between the two is that Peter wasn't really wrong for acting the way he did, he was under the impression Josie was single and she hadn't mentioned a boyfriend beforehand. I mean the guy is entitled to handle his emotions the way he did. Even if it did come off as harsh. In this case he is being mature and "backing off". I don't think a person in his position makes a big career move just on the basis of potentially rekindling a relationship, even if it felt implied by his "I miss you" that he was going to LA because of her. She automatically jumped to conclusions, and she most certainly is not immune to Peter and never has been that's why she was too flustered to just say "hey I'm with someone and I'm happy" when he told her he missed her.

As far as Richard is concerned, I just don't feel much sincerity in their relationship. There is a huge disconnect for me. As much as Josie comes off as being happy, I cannot get myself to feel a single shred of warmth towards Richard. I liked Richard when they were friends but ever since their relationship became romantic, he's become unlikable in my eyes. He feels forced and I just feel like they love each other because of their prior friendship. It all seems sexual with not much emotional connection. It's bound to bite them in the ass.

Peter was obviously on defense mode here. And can't really blame Josie for feeling let down by his response. Peter's "I miss you" bit totally gave her an excuse to expect a response much better than what Peter gave her here. I also agree that she shouldn't have had to meet up with him just to say she has a boyfriend and she's happy. She doesn't owe Peter a life update, does she? On the other hand, seeing Peter again makes for a very interesting plot twist to churn. Haha!

  39. I can't help but wonder if Richard is too good to be true at the moment. I agree that I think Peter is just trying to protect himself when he realized she wasn't into him anymore.

I'm also trying to start my own blog! Check it out - would love any feedback you might have!

  40. Peter seems to be trying to save face.
Josie was expecting a reaction, possibly some jealous reaction, because, like a lot of women, she likes the idea that someone, besides her bf, wants her.
Richard's family drama has the potential to cause issues between Josie and him when she is in LA. Then, in a night out to unwind and relax, Josie could turn to Peter.
Anything can happen and I can't wait to see where things go.

  41. EWWW. I hate Peter. What a controlling douche bag. He wants to feel like a big man so he uses Josie to do so. He likes being the BOSS over her and other young girls. I don't think he will ever see her as an equal, but as inferior and someone to be dominated over. Richard is slightly immature, but he has so much potential. He treats Josie like an equal.

  42. I liked it better when Josie was more focused on Richard than Peter. Just because Peter said he missed her doesn't mean she needed to go out of her way to meet him for drinks and tell him not to make any moves. I think secretly she kind of wishes he would make a move because she always goes back to Peter in one way or another.
